Teaching Drama

I've never been a drama person. I mean, I guess in elementary school I was into drama and had a few major roles (The North Star, and Snow White), but when it comes to skit time I pretty much stay away. So when the first day of school started and the principal had me slated to teach drama, I was like, 'Uh...ok'. And now I am SOOO glad I said OK, because it is so fun! The students are totally willing and even though we've only had two classes I love it. You know how we had electives, well in our school we call them exploratories. The kids don't get percentage grades, they get Proficient, Improving, and Unsatisfactory (P,I,U) because Asian culture takes grades really seriously and we want kids to 'explore' different things without the pressure of getting an A. So anyway, that takes away the pressure of intense grading, curriculums, etc. (Not the class isn't a learning time; there is work and homework and expectations, but just a little more chilled) I guess this may seem strange too, but the exploratories aren't system mandated. I mean, at the beginning of the year the middle school teachers get together and decide what they want to teach. So of course, I teach band and choir (Thats my job;), but other teachers do Book Club, or Student Council. Last year we had a First Aid exploratory, and a Life Lessons from the Twilight Zone class, where they would watch episodes from the Twilight Zone and discuss/critique them. The art teacher does Clay, or Watercolor, and this semester is doing Chalk Talk; where the kids go out and decorate the sidewalks and then talk to people about their work, sort of like an outreach/evangelism thing. I said I only wanted to teach drama one semester and suggested Paper Mache as my exploratory but now am having so much fun doing drama maybe I will do it again.

What exploratory would you like to teach or take?
