Yesterday, September 11, 2007, two of our longtime teachers went to the airport, boarded a plane, and flew away from Taiwan for maybe the last time. Miss Harder and Miss Vanderzwagg came to Taiwan over 30 years ago as young missionary teachers. They have worked with Morrison Academy for all those years.
It was so sad to see them go. Can you imagine saying goodbye to what was your life for 30 years? Packing up your whole house and office, and everything that was given to you or you bought for yourself... I mean, they came to Taiwan as young, just out of college girls and are leaving as grey haired women. The emotions are hard to describe as I think about that, and what they must be feeling. I mean, happy to be going home to live with their families again after 30 years, but still sad to say goodbye to so many people and places.
The farewell we had was really cool. They got picked up at home and brought to school, where all the students made a pathway for them to walk through. Then at the front of the school there was a limosine, and our maintenence guy was all dressed up in a suit and shades, with a head set phone so he looked like a real bodyguard or something and he carried their luggae and went with them to the airport. It was pretty awesome. But too emotional; I had to leave or else I would cry. (I am almsot in tears writing this post). Even down in my basement room, I could hear the final cheer from the kids as they drove away.
Does it make you think about where you will be in 30 years?
