I have gone from being super PO'd to calm this evening. I had a HUGE rant planned in my head, but fortunately things look as though they will work out. Pheww!
So in a package we got from Brenda (yay, thank you Brenda!) was some mail, government stuff. Skimming the letter all we caught was a YOU OWE ANOTHER 800 DOLLARS FOR INCOME TAX.. And we were like, UH! Jaws dropped, pits in stomach, feel like your going to barf, worse than a kick in the head feeling. Apparently they were missing some form, blah blah blah. A few things that ticked me off:
1) We pay an accountant a LOT of money to do our taxes. Why? BEcause we are stupid, because really it is one form. That's right, ONE form. We take that in for Chris and I and he charges us a buttload. So I pretty much expect a proffessional tax guy to fill out our stuff with no mistakes. I don't want to get letters form the government saying we need this and that and the other thing, thats why I hire an accounant. So I don't have to deal.
2) We do not make a lot of money. I won't publish that info online but it is VERY low, less than half of what I would make teaching in Canada. I have a dependant husband, and now child. We gave them 500 dollars for income tax in the spring on the first assessment, and now they are saying, Whoa, we reassessed it and we want another 800 dollars. Well, I know I don't need to tell you that 1300$ is a lot of money. So that ticked me off.
I don't even mind paying taxes. Canada is a sweet place to live and although it is not perfect, it is a lot better than some of the places I've been and heard of. So I will pay GST and PST and I'll even pay 500 dollars to support a country that I don't even live in 10 months of the year. But 1300? A little much! (I know some of you pay more than that; sorry! But for what I make, I still think it is too much! And definelty too much to come up with just like that)
I tried calling the toll free numbers, can't reach them from Taiwan. So my sister calls and talks to some guy, and they think if I fax her a few things she can take it down to the government building and get it sorted out. So I can't actually stay mad, and as exciting as it is to get really fired up about something I am just so relieved. Hopefully not prematurely:)
"When I think of a day that's gray and lonely, I just stick up my chin, and grin, and say...."
Sing it with me everyone:
"The sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun...."
I seriously have a song in my head every minute of the day. Occupational hazard. We've been studying Carmen in 4th grade and I have those songs in my head so badly! My husband, bless his heart, is so patient.

Nevada, If you paid an accountant, they are the ones you should call and they are supposed to deal with it. When you take your taxes in, you should have had a form to fill out with your information and stuff, and it should have said that they will take care of things like this. And they would have all the information to send into the government.
When I worked at the accounting firm, we had to deal with these kinds of things all the time, and they usually work out.
I hope it all works out for you!

I agree - give that job to the guy who you pay!
And I also get frustrated with this whole tax thing, when us regular people get nailed. I was audited a few years ago - when I was a student!! And they said I couldn't claim all of my schooling because I did my internship through the States and that school sent them the wrong form or something like that. In the end, it got straightened out, but I thought, for goodness sake -I am certainly not the first Canadian to do an international internship. Can't they figure this out? And when I called to try to fix everything, the guy I talked to was really quite dumb and totally didn't understand anything. I had to explain to him at least three times that my internship was mandatory to convocate - he kept telling me that I can't claim teaching overseas as education, just because it's a different experience. Buddy - I HAD to do an internship to graduate and yes, I CAN do it overseas!!!
Why can't they pick on people that make a ton of money - that way if they do catch them on something, it would at least be worth their effort. Because in reality, $800.00 is a lot to us, but not to the government!!
There's my rant for the day.
This link sums it up nicely.
